About Dr. Nathan Carter

Board-Certified Psychiatrist | Addiction Psychiatrist | Addiction Medicine Specialist

Nathan M. Carter, M.D. is a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in General Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Addiction Medicine. He is the founder of Bridge to Integrated Living and Bridge to Affective Wellness, where he provides comprehensive, patient-centered care tailored to each individual’s biological, psychological, and social needs.
 

Dr. Carter earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 2004. He completed his Psychiatry Residency at Wake Forest University in 2012, followed by a Fellowship in Addiction Psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2013.
 

In 2014, Dr. Carter became one of the first psychiatrists to practice within Atrium Health Davidson’s Dual Diagnosis Unit, helping patients navigate both mental health and substance use disorders. He later served at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center until March 2026. During his time there, he pioneered the use of 

intramuscular ketamine treatment for inpatient hospitalized patients with treatment-resistant depression, helping bring this innovative treatment option to individuals facing severe and complex depressive illnesses.
 

Through Bridge to Affective Wellness, Dr. Carter provides advanced treatment options for treatment-resistant depression, including Spravato® therapy. Through Bridge to Integrated Living, he specializes in the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions, utilizing an evidence-based, compassionate approach that supports long-term recovery and overall wellness.
 

Dr. Carter believes that effective psychiatric care extends beyond symptom management and focuses on helping individuals build meaningful, fulfilling lives. He is committed to creating a supportive environment where patients feel heard, respected, and empowered throughout their treatment journey.
 

Outside of his professional practice, Dr. Carter enjoys serving at his church, reading, and spending quality time with his family. He values faith, family, and lifelong learning, and brings those same principles into his work with patients every day.
